Key Ingredients and Substitutions

Here are the star ingredients and best swaps for making a creamy vegan avocado ranch dressing.

Dairy-free avocado ranch dressing ingredients with labels.
  • Avocado – Creates the rich, creamy texture while adding a mild, buttery flavor. You can use mashed avocado cups from the store for convenience. In a pinch, soaked cashews can provide creaminess, though the flavor will be different.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar – Adds the tangy flavor that helps give ranch dressing its signature taste. Fresh lemon juice, white wine vinegar, or distilled white vinegar all work well.
  • Plant Milk – Helps thin the dressing while keeping it smooth and creamy. Use an unsweetened and unflavored variety so the dressing stays savory. Unsweetened soy milk, oat milk, almond milk, or cashew milk are all great options. Water can also be used if needed.
  • Olive Oil – Adds richness and helps create a silky, smooth texture. Choose a mild olive oil if you don’t want a strong olive flavor. Avocado oil is a great alternative. For an oil-free version, simply leave it out and add a little extra plant milk.
  • Spices (Onion, Garlic, Dill, and Parsley) – Give ranch dressing its fresh, herby flavor. Dried herbs work great, but fresh herbs can make the flavor even brighter. Chives or green onions can also add extra fresh flavor if desired.

How To Make Dairy-Free Avocado Ranch Dressing

With fresh ingredients and a quick blend, you’ll savor the satisfaction of a healthier, tastier dressing that’s all your own.

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients – You’ll need plant-based milk, apple cider vinegar, a ripe avocado, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, parsley, and dill.

Step 2: Blend – In a blender (or food processor, another handy kitchen tool), add in all ingredients. Blend until smooth and creamy.

Finally, Step 3: Adjust Consistency and Seasoning – Taste the dressing and adjust the seasoning as needed. If the dressing is too thick, you can thin it out with a little water or a little lime juice. If it’s too thin, you can add more avocado to thicken it. Once you’re happy with the taste and consistency, transfer the dressing to an airtight container (like this wide mouth mason jar) and refrigerate until ready to use

Pro Tips

This avocado ranch dressing recipe is a condiment winner. Follow these tips for the best results:

  • Choose Ripe Avocados – Use avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure for the most creamy texture.
  • Blend, Blend, Blend – Give the ingredients time to mix together thoroughly for a smooth and creamy consistency.
  • Adjust the Thickness – Add a little more plant milk or water if the dressing is too thick. For a thicker dip, use less liquid.
  • Let It Chill Before Serving – Pop the dressing in the fridge for 30 minutes before serving. This gives the flavors time to blend together and taste even better.
  • Brighten It with Fresh Lemon Juice – Fresh lemon juice adds a fresh, tangy flavor and helps keep the avocado from browning as quickly.
