Key Ingredients and Substitutions

These key elements in an iced matcha are what make this drink so tasty and refreshing. From the earthy matcha powder to the creamy vegan milk and just the right touch of sweetness, each ingredient plays an important role. Here’s why these ingredients matter, plus some easy swaps if you want to try something different:

Gathered ingredients for making iced matcha lattes, including matcha powder, milk, ice, hot water, and maple syrup.
  • Matcha Powder: The star ingredient that gives the latte its rich, earthy flavor and vibrant green color. It also provides a gentle energy boost and antioxidants. For a different twist, you can use regular green tea powder, though it won’t be as rich in flavor. If you’re caffeine-sensitive, you can swap matcha for a caffeine-free option like spirulina powder, though the taste and color will be different.
  • Ice: Essential for creating that refreshing, chilled experience! It keeps the drink cool and refreshing, making it perfect for warm days or when you want a cold pick-me-up. If you prefer a less watery drink, you can freeze some oat milk or matcha tea into ice cubes. This keeps your latte cold without diluting the flavor as the ice melts!
  • Oat Milk: Adds creaminess and a slightly sweet, neutral flavor that complements the matcha without overpowering it. It also froths well, making it great for a latte texture. You can use almond milk for a lighter taste, coconut milk for a richer, tropical vibe, or soy milk if you prefer more protein in your drink.
  • Maple Syrup: Provides a natural sweetness with a hint of warmth that pairs nicely with matcha. It also dissolves easily, making it convenient for cold drinks. Feel free to use agave syrup for a similar smooth sweetness or vegan honey instead. If you want a sugar-free option, liquid stevia or monk fruit sweetener can do the trick.

  • Garnishes Galore!: There are so many delicious options such as an extra sprinkle of matcha, powdered sugar, colorful edible flowers (including dried lavender, red clover, nasturtiums, marigolds, chamomile, roses, violets, and pansies), vegan whipped cream, shredded coconut, fresh mint leaves, lemon zest, or a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg.
  • Try a Flavor Twist: Add a splash of vanilla or almond extract for a unique flavor twist that brings your iced matcha latte to the next level.
  • Chill Your Glass: For an extra refreshing treat, chill your glass in the freezer before serving. It keeps your drink colder for longer.

  • Pair with a Light Snack: Enjoy your latte with a light snack like a small fruit salad or a handful of nuts (like these scrumptious candied walnuts) to complement the flavors and keep you satisfied.

What is a Ceremonial Matcha Tea Ritual?

A ceremonial matcha tea ritual is a calming and mindful practice that highlights the art of preparing and enjoying matcha. Start by sifting a small amount of matcha powder into a bowl to remove any lumps. Then, whisk the matcha with hot water using a bamboo whisk in a gentle, circular motion until it becomes frothy and vibrant green.

As you sip the matcha (using both hands), take a moment to appreciate its rich, earthy flavor and the peaceful ritual of the preparation. This practice is not just about drinking tea; it’s a way to slow down, enjoy the moment, and connect with the tradition of matcha.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the iced matcha latte at Starbucks vegan?

Yes! Make Starbucks‘ Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte vegan by simply ordering it with a plant-based milk (such as almond, coconut, oat, or soy milk) and requesting no whipped topping.

Is Dunkin’s iced matcha latte vegan and dairy-free?

Yes, it can be vegan! Simply order the latte with almond, oat milk, or coconut milk and no whipped cream. There’s also the option of adding a vegan-friendly flavor syrup shot such as vanilla, hazelnut, toasted almond, blueberry, raspberry, mocha swirl, or coconut.

How do I store any leftover iced matcha?

You can store an matcha iced latte in the fridge for about 2 to 3 days. Make sure it’s stored in a sealed container (such as a mason jar with lid) to maintain its taste and avoid absorbing other odors from the fridge. Stir or shake it well before drinking since the matcha can settle over time

  • In a glass, add milk, ice, maple syrup, and matcha mixture, and mix until fully combined.
