The Joy of Vegan Baking

Why We Love It: Colleen Patrick-Goudreau is #VeganBakingGoals. Her landmark cookbook, The Joy of Vegan Baking, has been one of our personal all-time faves for more than a decade. It’s one of the essential vegan baking cookbooks in any kitchen.

It’s also a must-read for anyone who thinks that vegan baking is somehow less-than baking with animal by-products, or that you have to deprive yourself of sweet and sumptuous desserts just because you want to eat plant-based and cruelty-free.

With 150 dessert recipes, from cakes and pastries to puddings and cookies, The Joy of Vegan Baking will become your go-to for desserts for practically every occasion.

Why You Need It:

  • You want a dairy- and egg-free dessert cookbook that will serve you well for practically every occasion and life event
  • You want to prepare vegan desserts that taste just like their non-vegan counterparts

Chloe’s Vegan Desserts

Why We Love It: In addition to The Joy of Vegan Baking, Chloe’s Vegan Desserts is one of those vegan baking cookbooks that should be on every vegan’s kitchen shelf.

In Chloe’s Vegan Desserts, chef Chloe Coscarelli—who entered the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars and won—offers recipes that appeal to experienced and newbie vegans alike.

She uses simple, clear language and ingredients that you could find at most any grocery store. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that each of the recipes in this cookbook are practically guaranteed crowd-pleasers at any event for both vegans and omnivores.

Why You Need It:

  • You’re a fan of Chloe’s Kitchen and want more dessert inspiration from Chloe Coscarelli
  • Want to bake using common, widely accessible baking ingredients

Why We Love It: First of all, that name—how could we not love a cookbook with a quirky name like that?! Secondly, we are totally in favor of a vegan cookie invasion in our kitchen.

Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar comes from vegan cooking greats Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero. It offers 100 delectable cookie recipes that will delight herbivores and omnivores alike.

With a dose of sass and pages of gorgeous food photography, this cookbook will guide you through the vegan versions of cookie classics like chocolate chip cookies and snickerdoodles, to fancier fare like macadamia lace cookies. A must-have for vegans who are looking for a cookbook that’s as funny and trustworthy as a good friend.

Why You Need It:

  • You eat only slightly less cookies than the Cookie Monster
  • Want a mix of health-conscious and sinful cookie recipes
  • Want the vegan versions of cookie classics and newer contenders

Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World

Why We Love It: We love Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero’s cookbooks because they think big. Not just cupcakes to, say, please your family, but to take over the world. And trust us, these recipes are going to invade your life—but in a good, benevolent way.

Aside from the gorgeous food photography, Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World is great for newbie vegans because it doesn’t require food complex non-vegan substitutions or specialty ingredients that will run up your grocery bill.

Why You Need It:

  • You want a mix of classic and bold cupcake recipes
  • You’re hungry for something indulgent after working so hard to crush your health-conscious eating goals at your other meals
  • You want foolproof recipes that come out perfect every time

Vegan Pie In The Sky

Why We Love It: We know what you’re thinking…another cookbook by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero? Yup—Vegan Pie In The Sky completes this perfect trio of vegan dessert cookbooks. We just can’t help it—we’re enamored with their dessert cookbooks!

As with their other dessert recipes, Vegan Pie in the Sky is a must-have for vegans who love baking but who don’t like all of the fuss and hard-to-find ingredients that can often come with vegan baking recipes. Isa and Tony dish up 75 cheesecake, tarte, pie, and cobbler recipes that will absolutely knock-your-socks off with reasonable ingredient lists and straightforward directions that even the newest baker can follow with ease.

Why You Need It:

  • You love cooking with a cookbook that has a healthy sense of humor
  • You’re looking for pies that will instill friends and family with a sense of warmth and sentimentality, but not all of the highly-processed ingredients and animal-derivates
  • To complete your set of all three of these adorable vegan dessert cookbooks!

Sweet Vegan Treats

Why We Love It: Written by longtime vegan baking superstar Hannah Kaminsky, Sweet Vegan Treats has gorgeous food photography and recipes that will have you dreaming of a vegan dessert heaven. Not only are these recipes absolutely sumptuous, but it’s almost guaranteed that these will be a smash with everyone since each recipe was tested by vegan and non-vegan folks.

Why You Need It:

  • You don’t mind using vegan baking alternatives, like tofu or vegan cream cheese
  • Want recipes that have been taste-tested by vegans and non-vegans

Vegan Chocolate: Unapologetically Luscious and Decadent Dairy-Free Desserts

Why We Love It: A vegan dessert cookbook filled with decadent chocolate delights—what’s not to love?

Many of the recipes in Vegan Chocolate require special ingredients or baking equipment that most experienced baking aficionados would have on hand. But don’t let that deter you from checking out this book.

Author and baker Fran Costigan’s cookbook has a mix of both simple and more time-consuming recipes that are, in a word, indulgent. Keep in mind, however, that given the quality of ingredients that Costigan requires, many of these recipes would be put to best use for more elegant or formal gatherings and parties. But then again, we aren’t ones to limit our chocolate intake! Just keep in mind that since these recipes require more gourmet-quality ingredients and time-consuming preparation, this may be better once you’ve grown acclimated to vegan baking.

Why You Need It:

  • When you bake, you prefer to bake something chocolatey
  • You don’t mind spending on several gourmet-quality and specialty ingredients, even for just one recipe
  • You’re looking for more formal vegan dessert fare to serve at your next big dinner or holiday gathering

Modern Vegan Baking

Why We Love It: Designed by a professional pastry chef and former bakery owner, suffice to say that the 125 recipes in Modern Vegan Baking are pretty darn delicious.

Modern Vegan Baking offers clear directions, some of the processes may be a little daunting for vegans who aren’t familiar with baking equipment and vegan baking alternatives (like aquafaba). Therefore, Modern Vegan Baking would be a good vegan dessert cookbook option for those who are comfortable experimenting with new things and working with more trendy ingredients, like aquafaba and arrowroot powder. As a bonus, if you’re baking as a vegan but are concerned about certain allergens, she gives directions on what substitutions will work in their place and why.

Why You Need It:

  • You want to prepare bakery-quality desserts
  • You enjoy preparing more advanced baked goods
  • You’re comfortable using less commonly-used baking ingredients like arrowroot and aquafaba

Rawsome Vegan Baking: An Un-cookbook for Raw, Gluten-Free, Vegan, Beautiful and Sinfully Sweet Cookies, Cakes, Bars & Cupcakes

Why We Love It: So a lot of people think that eating dessert as a raw vegan is basically like eating a banana or some pineapple and calling it a day.

You would be shocked (dare we even say, shooketh) to see the spread of delicious raw vegan cookies, dessert bars, cupcakes, and more in Rawsome Vegan Baking. Honestly, even we were shocked to see the little sugary beauties that you can make without (technically) baking anything! As a nice little bonus, many of these recipes are gluten-free and oil-free.

Why You Need It:

  • You follow a raw diet or want to incorporate more raw foods into your meals

Well, we saved one of the best for last!
