Right now in our society there is a legitimate debate about what the proper relationship with other animals ought to be. Paul has us consider what else passed for legitimate debate in our country not long ago:
- 150 years ago the legitimate debate was whether one person ought to be able to own another human being.
- 100 years ago the legitimate debate was whether women, more than half the population, should be allowed to vote.
- 50 years ago the legitimate debate was whether whites and blacks should be able to drink out of the same water fountain.
- 10 years ago the legitimate debate was whether gay americans should have the same rights as other americans.
Yet today, if you were to take the wrong side on any of these issues, you would be a social pariah. So what might be possible a few decades from now? Paul argues that people will look back in utter revulsion at the way we use and exploit animals, especially for food, and people will be shocked at the routine cruelty we inflict on animals who did nothing to deserve it.
