Where to begin? Nutella is what dreams are made of! This creamy, sweet, and nutty delicious chocolate hazelnut spread has the ability to make crepes, toast, cake, ice cream, and almost everything better. But the original Nutella sadly isn’t vegan. In this guide we showcase the most popular vegan chocolate hazelnut butter brands available in stores and a delicious recipe for homemade Nutella.

The original version of Nutella is full of dairy, but there are several insanely delicious vegan versions on the market (this Nocciolata is our absolute fave). Plus, the recipe below is much healthier and cruelty-free!

What Is Nutella—and Is Nutella Vegan?

Nutella is a divine smooth and creamy chocolate hazelnut spread commonly used in sweet crepes, on toast, drizzled on top of ice cream, and beyond. The original Nutella (by the brand called Nutella) is unfortunately not vegan (it contains milk). But Nutella is essentially a mix of chocolate and hazelnut butter, and you can easily make your own that is even better than the store bought kind!

In this recipe we show how to make Nutella with just three ingredients: creamy hazelnut butter, dark chocolate, and coconut milk. That’s it!

The Best Vegan Nutella Brands

This recipe is ridiculously simple, with only three ingredients. But f you can’t be bothered making your own, there are several brands of vegan Nutella that exist today! Here are our favorites:

  • Nocciolata Dairy-Free Hazelnut Spread with Cocoa (palm oil free, gluten-free, and dairy-free)
nocciolata dairy free nutella brand rigoni di asiago

Jars of Nucolato vegan hazelnut spread.

Many of these options are available online and in stores, but if you can’t find them, you can also substitute any chocolate nut butter for Nutella in any recipes (or to eat by the spoonful).

Always Better Homemade!

Whenever you can avoid buying the processed version of something, try making it yourself! There are so many staples which I prefer to make at home. If not to save some money, to generate less waste and, to be honest, sometimes homemade just tastes better.

For example, when it comes to almond milk, homemade tastes so much better to me. Maybe its the lack of additives or just the freshness, but there’s a whole world of difference between the two. Same thing with vegan Nutella! Store-bought brands usually come with many other ingredients added like oils and extra sugars, but this minimal version is much cleaner.

Vegan Nutella Add-Ons

We don’t need to argue that Nutella on its own is pretty amazing, but a few add-ons here and there could help you make a variation to switch it up every now and then! But how?

Adding a few simple dashes of cinnamon to the mix could give it a delicious fall/holiday touch. Yum! What about some drops of peppermint flavor (oil or extract)? Minty chocolate Nutella sounds dreamy, right? Something like after-eight spread? Yes, please!

If you don’t mind playing around with the texture, you could add some chopped peanuts, coconut shreds or cacao nibs (if you like the crunch!) and the more obvious addition of roasted hazelnut pieces. A bit like crunchy peanut butter!

Ways to Use Vegan Nutella

Wondering how exactly you can use Nutella in your cooking, baking, and recipes? Well, first of all, this shouldn’t be a problem because you can always eat it straight from the jar with your beloved spoon! But if you need a bit of guidance, here are a few ideas.

Spread it on bread (or anything!)

Slice some white baguette and just spread it all over. On your morning toast or bagel? Yes! You can also try a vegan Nutella and banana sandwich in place of a classic PB&J.

Fill some vegan crepes

Have you tried Nutella filled crepes before? They are the ultimate sweet winter street food here in Europe. On the cold evenings in London or Paris, they have carts line up with steaming pans of freshly cooked crepes, which can be filled with delightful Nutella, banana, strawberries, and beyond. Now you can make your own version of that at your cozy home! Perfect!

Enjoy it as a fruit dip

If fresh strawberries are in season, enjoy them dipped in Nutella, fondu style!

Drizzle it on (basically) everything

This homemade vegan Nutella would be an amazing topping for your cozy bowl of morning oats or the well-deserved ice cream bowl of ice cream on Friday night. You can mark my words; this goes well with anything sweet!

Eat it by the spoonful

If you’re itching for a sweet treat, grab a spoonful of Nutella — it’s just as satisfying as a square of chocolate

Can’t Find Hazelnut Butter? Let’s Make Our Own!

Ok, we know! Hazelnut butter may not be something you can find easily at your go-to grocery store. But trust me when I tell you that making your own takes a few minutes, and it’s so, so good!

You can find hazelnuts in the bulk section at some grocery stores. Extra points if you find them on sale! Making your own hazelnut butter only takes one ingredient, hazelnuts, and a food processor and warm oven.

  • Place your hazelnuts on the tray (make sure it’s only one layer) and bake at 350° F for 15 minutes.
  • Make sure you check it often! You don’t want them to burn because you’ll waste that batch.
  • When they are ready, take them out and place onto a clean kitchen towel.
  • Rub them until their skin easily peels off.
  • Place them in your food processor and process until a cream is formed. You might need to stop and scrape the sides a few times.
  • Keep on going until you get smooth nut butter (like creamy peanut butter)!

What kind of coconut milk? The kind from a can or the kind that is akin to soy, almond and oat in the refrigerated section?

    • Either one will work! Canned coconut milk is a little thicker with a stronger coconut flavor but if you prefer a lighter coconut flavor you can use coconut milk from a carton in the refrigerated section.

This vegan Nutella is a dream come true! I absolutely adored adding this spread to my crepes before going vegan so I’m so thankful we now have the chance to make this vegan version at home. It’s so creamy and chocolaty! YUM!

Creamy, dreamy heaven! I used to love Nutella before I became vegan. I had no idea that Nutella had milk in it (which I guess makes sense if you think about it), but I was so bummed not to have it for my waffles or toast anymore. This recipe actually beats Nutella hands down! I love how rich, chocolately and nutty this spread is and it really is amazing with peppermint oil – omg…sooo good! The only problem is trying to put the jar away and not eat it all in one day – lol!

Wow! This nutella is amazing. So great to have a vegan version of this rich creamy goodness to make myself. I love to drizzle it on my morning oatmeal. Dipping pineapple slices, and apples in this are right up there as well! Yum!!

I am OBSESSED with the dairy-free Nocchiolata from Rigoni Di Asiago. I ordered a 6-pack on Amazon, LOL. It’s JUST like traditional Nutella. But it’s so nice to have a recipe for a super-healthy homemade vegan nutella too!

Stay Inspired!
